I am having this exact same problem as canoe ("couldn't be loaded because it doesn't contain a version for the current architecture") with my Canon MP980 while trying to print a basic PDF in Preview. Note: using the old Canon software, like described in the original hint, may very well be a better idea!

It's terribly slow though, but I did not investigate that yet. It doesn't give me the Printer Utilities (hardly ever used them) nor the supply levels (Leopard didn't either). The Gutenprint driver supports duplex, and all paper sources including the printable cd tray.

Here, selecting Canon iP4000R gets me in an endless loop, but changing it into Canon PIXMA iP4000 - Gutenprint v5.2.3 (and leaving the name for the queue empty) works fine.

Add a new IP printer, select Line Printer Daemon, enter the IP address or DHCP name, and change Print Using: Generic PostScript Printer into Print Using: Select Printer Software.

(For me, the printer showed and installed without any question.)

Connect through USB, to ensure the printer driver is installed.
